Yet another new blog

Well I have decided to retire the old web server, or at least remove some of its more dynamic duties such as generating various blog pages. The old machine was a Sun Ultra 10 workstation that I inherited from an old research project and which does not have sufficient RAM for the kind of dynamic web serving tasks that I required. That said, for plain html it was fast and robust, but for the ARG group internal blog it was taking up to twenty seconds to generate the front page which was leading to complaints to me from the other users. As all the sites needed a cleaning out, tidying up, and were long overdue a serious backing up I set up a new website on another machine that I have inherited, Glenn’s old workstation. I then had to face the tough decision about whether to retain my old posts and I decided not to because many of them were time dependent. For example the majority of the posts concerned last years teaching and were aimed at keeping my students informed about updates to the various notes and slides that concerned their courses. I decided that it wasn’t worth keeping those, and to reinforce the point I have put together the current post. It is all new data from here on out…
